APS boys plan their tour

The historic Dunham Massey estate provided the ideal outdoor classroom for a party of young naturalists from Altrincham Preparatory School.

Everywhere the boys looked, whether in a Georgian outbuilding or just under a log, there was a lesson in both natural and social history.

The magnificent 30 bedroom house and outbuildings provided the perfect backdrop to the walk in the park, as a party of 30 boys and four staff enjoyed a guided tour through the magnificent 250 acres.

From Dunham’s famous deer herd to the study of local lichens and the ancient art of cheese making, the boys were continually amazed by the world around them.

Altrincham Preparatory School Assistant Deputy Head Caroline Austen said: “Our Year Two boys learned so much in just three hours. There are so many different natural habitats to examine. There are insights into our ancestors’ culture as seen in the outbuildings such as the slaughter house, dairy and water mill. Plus it was simply a chance to get to know each other better in a beautiful autumnal setting, ”

Ms Austen added: “Sadly such school visits are happening far less frequently because of the necessary pressure of H & S assessments and the ensuing risk analysis and paper work, but it is part of school life that is very important at APS. ”
