APS News

Hale sixth form student Michael Lipton is hoping to represent Great Britain in the Physics Olympics after winning a prestigious gold medal in the national heats.

Michael, an 18-year-old Manchester Grammar School pupil from Harrop Road, came in the top 190 young physicists nationwide and will now sit another paper to qualify for Olympic selection.

Michael, who has already earned an offer from Trinity College, Cambridge to read Mathematics says of the opportunity to represent his country: "It would be a great honour and a great challenge. I'll do everything I can to make it happen." A former pupil at Altrincham Preparatory School, Michael added: "I prefer Mathematics and the Sciences because they are more precise than other subjects. Whose is the better English essay always seems to me to be subjective, but there are right and wrong answers in the sciences." He added: "At MGS we have been studying fusion power in Physics, which is an emerging technology which could have immense benefits for mankind and its wonderful to be studying such an important advance."

Simon Hunt, Head of Physics at The Manchester Grammar School, said: "You need a good clean logical mind and fair slice of intellectual ability to be good at Physics. It is also important to have a creative approach to problem solution."
