Nursery: Communication, Language & Literacy

Our Nursery boys are already starting to develop fundamental reading and writing skills. As a group we take part in daily Jolly Phonics sessions which encourage them to hear and identify the initial sounds in words. Further planned activities related to our ‘sound of the week’ help to solidify this learning. Nursery boys are encouraged to communicate with us and each other throughout these activities and we regularly introduce new vocabulary. We give them time to ask questions and use talk to connect ideas. Reading with the boys is one of the best ways we can encourage their early literacy and language skills, and a typical day will involve lots of books, either enjoyed 1:1 or as a group. We also enjoy a variety of opportunities for mark-making.
