Congratulations! At the end of a full day of competition at Cranleigh School, Surrey, APS won the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools National U11 Hockey Finals.
NATIONAL INDEPENDENT ASSOCIATION OF PREPARATORY SCHOOLS U.11 HOCKEY FINALS
Having only been playing the sport competitively for 5 years, APS were appearing at the National Finals for the fourth time. Determined to better last year’s team which finished 5th in the country, this year’s team played some excellent hockey on a sunny day at Cranleigh School, Surrey.
In the group matches APS beat The Perse Prep (Cambridge) 3-0, Hoe Bridge (Surrey) 2-0, New College 2-1 and lost 1-0 to Chafyn Grove (Salisbury) to finish runners-up of the group and so qualify for the main cup competition.
The quarter final was against Kings College, Cambridge and the APS boys fought hard to win 3-2.
In the semi final APS played some really skilful hockey against Parkside School (Surrey) winning 4-0 to reach the final where they would have to play Chafyn Grove again. This time the APS boys showed their excellent defensive skills and the game finished 0-0 after extra time. Penalty “shuffles” followed in which three players from each team had eight seconds to score starting from five yards outside the circle. Chafyn Grove failed to score but APS scored twice to take the title of National IAPS U.11 years Hockey Champions.
NORTH OF ENGLAND SCHOOLS “IN2” HOCKEY FINALS
The day after the National Preparatory Schools Finals, an APS Year 6 team travelled to Leeds University playing fields as Cheshire/Greater Manchester Champions to take part in the North All Schools Finals. With many of the boys still tired from the previous day’s exertions the team battled through the group stages and then beat King’s Chester 2-1 in the semi finals before winning a penalty flick decider in the final against Kirkham Grammar Junior School to become North of England champions for the second year in a row.
