ALTRINCHAM PREPARATORY SCHOOL
October 2012
FROM THE HEAD MASTER
The weather may have set its challenges this first half term of the
new academic year but its quest to dampen spirits has been
thwarted. True to our school song the school has remained valiant.
Never daunted, the school has continued to follow its standard bear-
ers: excellence, breadth and a celebration of our diversity. This cele-
bration of diversity found its true expression when we met as one
school for our traditional Harvest Festival. It was delightful to see so
many Parents willingly and generously finding time to join with us as
well as Reverend Myles Owen, the new member to the St. Mary's
Bowdon C of E team.
Excellence and breadth are more readily been seen in our academic
success and sport this half. Although I wait for a secure analysis of
the year 6 entrance examination success to the state grammar
schools all the initial signs are that once again APS has excelled.
In sport the results continue as wins with only the occasional set-
back. However, it is not the winning that so impresses; rather the
team camaraderie and the never letting the elements, or the quality
of the opposition, get the better of you. This is what marks an APS
boy and makes him stand out amidst a crowd. A quality of passing
rugby up at Sedburgh, in conditions where swimming suits would
have been more appropriate, was not matched by any other team in
the competition no matter how famous their names might have
been. All of year 2 already playing for the school and year 3 taking
the first 7 places in a cross-country run (despite more historic names
being in the field) are two other highlights for this start of the year.
I remain delighted that the APS Parents’ Society continues its social
and supportive activities with such enthusiasm and bonhomie. The
MacMillan coffee morning and Hallowe’en disco have started the
year off with aplomb! I encourage you to attend the AGM and to join
in. Hard work but decidedly fun and rewarding for all boys, not just
your own son.
