SPORT
The bad weather during September and October may have caused some
disruption to sport at A.P.S. but it did not prevent nearly 200 boys (more
than ever before) enjoying the chance to represent the school at either foot-
ball, rugby or cross-country and producing some fantastic results.
It was tremendous to see all of Year 2 resplendent in smart A.P.S. kit and
brightly coloured team bibs running onto the pitches at the Manchester City
Academy to play football against other schools and each other. They were a
credit to themselves and the school in the way they played the game and
behaved in a sportsman like way throughout the morning.
More than half our Year 3 boys have had a chance to play football for A.P.S.
this half term, developing their passing skills and positional play well and
winning all four matches against Ryleys and Terra Nova. The other Year 3
boys will be looking forward to their turn after the holidays.
The Year 4 boys all played for the school and an A team remained unbeaten
and won the North West Prep schools Tournament at Manchester City. The
Year 5 boys had some good results and only just failed to retain the Terra
Nova 6-a-side trophy, losing 1-0 in the final as they conceded their only goal
of the competition.
The Year 6 boys also all represented the school and the 1
st
team won the
Kings Macclesfield 7-a-side Tournament ahead of schools such as Bolton,
Bury, Kings Chester and Stockport.
A Year 5/6 Rugby 1
st
Xii went to Sedbergh School on a very wet September
Sunday Morning and with some of the best passing skills on display that day
won the plate competition in a tournament with schools from London, Lin-
coln, Newcastle and Cumbria.
Meanwhile every boy in Year 3-6 was given the opportunity to run in the
Altrincham Schools Cross Country League at John Leigh Park. In the first
meeting, James won the A race with Harry second. Ashley managed 7th in
the B race. On the second meeting, Harry finished second again, with 5 of
the 6 A.P.S. runners in the top 20. It was brilliant to see around thirty ath-
letes from Years 3-6 running for the school on each occasion, easily the
most represented school at each event.
One of the most amazing sights of the cross-country season so far was at
the North West Prep
Schools Fun Run at Pownall
Park where in the Year 3
race, consisting of over 100
boys from schools such as
S t
Ambrose, M.G.S. and Stock-
port G.J.S. The first seven
places were all taken by
A.P.S. boys! A.P.S. also
went on to come first in the
Year 4 and Year 5 races.
Hopefully the weather will
improve and maybe even
our performances as the
boys start to play more
rugby and hockey next half
term but whatever happens
A.P.S. boys will continue
playing in the right spirit.
