SCIENCE WEEK
The A.P.S. Science week took place between 11
th
-15
th
June 2012. The theme of the week was based on the Na-
tional Science Week theme of “the world in motion”. The
boys took part in a variety of practical activities during the
week as well as attempting science quizzes and posters.
The Nursery boys took part in a poster competition to de-
sign a vehicle that can travel over a variety of surfaces.
They also made rockets out of empty plastic bottles and
we fired them into the atmosphere on the field. They also
explored different plants and animals in the school
grounds.
At Highbury, Reception boys also took part in the poster
competition and carried out a range of practical activities.
The Year 1 boys focused their attentions on “bees!” They
found many interesting facts about different types of bees
as well as making some moving bee cards that contained
super poems. The boys also took part in a 60 question
Science quiz based on the topics covered during the year.
The Year 2 boys had a daily “early morning Science Quiz
challenge” and made ear amplifiers to test how we can
hear sounds. They also researched how we communicate
through Morse code and used their knowledge of electrical
circuits to communicate in a similar way.
At Marlborough Road, the Year 3 boys focused on building
structures using items such as straws and marsh mellows.
They began with a design process, looking at the materials
available. They were set two tasks:
Design the strongest shape
Design the tallest tower
The boys had a great fun investigating this task and I was
impressed with the designs that were invented.
The Year 4 boys focused on designing and building model
boats with a propeller out of empty fruit juice cartons.
They used their knowledge of forces (a topic that was ex-
plored during the autumn term) to consider factors such
as gravity, friction and upthrust. After initial testing, some
of the boys went back to the drawing board and made
alterations to their designs. This was followed by a final
test to see how fast and how far they could travel.
The Year 5 boys visited Jodrell Bank as part of their topic
on “The earth and space”. They learnt about how the uni-
verse started from the Big Bang and how that created eve-
rything we see today. They went into a dome where we
saw the solar system and how the earth rotates around
the sun. They learnt about how the constellations were
named by the Greeks. They also found out that Jodrell
Bank is the H.Q. for a global mapping of space involving
