ALTRINCHAM PREPARATORY SCHOOL
December 2014
As the Christmas holiday rushes towards me I take comfort in the knowledge that the power of the Christmas story lies not in its
human perfection — for there is none — but in its divine imperfection. This imperfect state very much reflects where I presently
stand thinking, as in the Evensong confessional prayer, of having ‘left undone those things (I) ought to have done’. Yes, this was
going to be the perfect Christmas — all school work efficiently carried out well in advance of the end of term, cards and presents
signed and sealed and on their way ages before the deadline guaranteed to ensure they arrived in time. Not done, though I
plead the task was an unrealistic and unrealisable objective when you play a part in the life of a busy school – and, wow, how
busy life is at APS!
The school never stays still. It is endlessly restless as it seeks to provide your son with something special. One innovation this
year has been the ‘Scrapbook’ on the website as we try to give you quick immediate insight into the experiences your son is en-
joying; we are a boys’ school and males typically are not the best at recounting events that have taken place during the day on
their return home. Forty-three Scrapbook pages and counting paints a vivid picture. To some extent this might make this
Newsletter redundant though I would disagree with such a perspective. Drawing together the jewels into one overarching
presentation will afford an opportunity the gain a feel for the whole picture not just your select ‘bubble’.
I hope you enjoy reading the contributions and I hope that you have time over this holiday period to find a few protected
moments to dwell on and learn from the Christmas story, it is a story full of wonder and awe. I hope you were able to join us for
the Carol Service on the last day of term and enjoyed listening to the spine-tingling music performed by our boys in the
atmospheric setting of Bowdon, St. Mary’s Parish Church.
My best Wwshes for a lovely Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
