Agog at the synagogue

Thursday 18th June

Today the Y4s were fortunate enough to get the opportunity to visit the local synagogue as part of their work in RE on religions in our community. Following on from previous visits to the parish church and Altrincham mosque, the weather stayed dry for us as we walked from school during the morning. Upon arrival many of the boys immediately noticed that on the building were some of the Jewish symbols they had learned about (the Star of David) and some Hebrew writing. Once inside Judy and Leslie showed us some commemorative plaques in the entrance hall and then took us through to the paryer hall in the centre of the building.

Here we learned about some of the practices of the Jewish faith (including the importance and symbolism behind such things as the prayer shawl, kippah and torah scrolls). We then found out that the synagogue was also used as an important social centre for the community, where people could gather to meet and socialise. The boys were fantastic and the visit was a worthwhile one, extending our knowledge and understanding of Judaism.
