SCIENCE
June 10
th
-14th was the annual A.P.S. School Science
week. This year’s theme was based around promoting
ways to recycle and reuse unwanted materials.
Boys in the infants took part in a challenge to design
an invention that recycles, or is made from recycled
materials. The Year 1 and 2 boys answered 60
questions based on topics covered this year as part of
a science quiz. All the boys at Highbury took part in a
series of science sessions based at the adjacent
Bell Field site, taking part in wildlife studies.
Year 3 boys designed “shadow puppet theatres” from
old boxes as a part of their light and shadows topics.
Mrs White and Mrs Rogerson enjoyed the productions
later in the term!
Year 4 boys used their knowledge of forces from the
autumn term to plan, design and build elastic powered
boats made from old juice cartons. They took into
account factors such as streamlining, air resistance and
upthrust when designing their vessels.
Year 5 boys were given the task of making a new
Invention from a two litre drinks bottle. Designs
included a new version of “kerplunk”, marble stores,
watering cans, games and even hanging baskets!! The
boys also visited the science department at AGSB and
took part in a series of experiments that involved lots
of explosions and gasses!! It was great fun.
Year 6 boys also used their knowledge of forces to
build bridges from paper and newspaper. We emptied
the giant paper recycling bin outside the front of school
and built bridges with a variety of designs. Some of the
bridges were able to hold over 5kg in weight. At the
end we were able to put the bridges that didn’t survive
back into the recycling bin!
The boys also took part in a nature walk with the pre-
school boys. It was their turn to be in charge, although
some of the pre-school boys gave them a run for their
money!!! We explored the Marlborough Road field,
looking for different types of leaves and mini beasts.
