SPORT
Despite more bad weather (just like last term!) this has been another fantastic few months for sport at APS. Last
week saw the completion of an unprecedented achievement take place, with EVERY boy from KS1 and KS2 having
now had the opportunity to represent the school at football during this academic year. This is something I doubt can
be matched at any other school in the country!
Before the end of term, Year 1 boys took part in a Games
lesson that also allowed them to find out how it feels to be
part of a team when Pownall Hall School brought a mixture of
Year 1/2 boys to the aquaturf. We began the games in over-
cast conditions but the weather soon deteriorated. Despite
this, all the A.P.S. boys demonstrated both great skills and
sportsmanship throughout the morning.
During the first half of term Year 3 boys beat Rydal School (Wales) at Tag rugby and then two days later beat Kings
School Chester at football. The Year 4 boys had their first game of rugby and beat Rossall, scoring 14 tries! Boys in
Year 5 had their tour matches called off against a touring school from London, which was a huge disappointment as
over 30 boys were excited about playing in that fixture. A Year 5 team played really well against the Ryleys to win 25
-5 in one of their first fixtures of the season. The Year 6 1
st
team also played some great Rugby, warming up with a
win against Rossall school before beating St Marys Hall Stonyhurst School 35-14.
The cross-country runners went to the Lake District
to run in a fell race in the snowy hills of Sedbergh and
finished in a very creditable 4
th
place.
The Year 6 12-a-side team beat Ryleys School and drew with The Grange School, while the Year 5 team played well
to beat The Grange 50-0 and the Year 4 team beat Merchant Taylors School by the same score line, with all our
teams playing some great free flowing rugby as A.P.S. boys are renowned for.
All the boys in Year 3 have played tag rugby for the school this term and half the boys in Year 4 have played for the
school. Even more boys would have had the opportunity if it hadn’t been for the frozen, wet or snowy conditions!
The School football first team played in the ISFA North West Football competition at Bolton Wanderers Academy. It
was a glorious day for football and our performances improved throughout the competition. Having come through a
really tough group, including schools such as Kings Chester and Bolton School, we beat M.G.S. in the quarter finals
and Cheadle Hulme in the semis to play Bolton School in the final. In a closely fought contest, we lost 1-0 but the
boys can be proud of their achievements on the day.
