World War Two
It may just have been brought to the
attention of one or two parents that Year 4
have been looking at WW2 as their History
topic this term.
It has been incredibly gratifying to see how
enthusiastic the boys have been about the
work. They have learned many new and in-
teresting facts about the events of the war
and also how people’s lives were different in
that era. They have been able to display
great empathy with children in the past, as
evidenced by their written work on
experiencing air raids and evacuation.
It has also been noticeable just how much
some of the boys have been able to find out
about family history relating to the period.
Many boys have come into school with family
heirlooms from the war or with tales and
stories of the experiences of family
members, some of which they had no
knowledge about prior to beginning our
work.
The learning the boys have done has been a
real mixture of work inside and outside the
classroom and our thanks go to all the
parents and other family members who have
fostered this.
Stockport Museum and Air Raid Shelters
Our annual trip to the Stockport Museum and Air
Raid Shelters was once more a great success.
The boys (and parents) did themselves proud with
their evacuee costumes and thoroughly looked the
part as they march through Stockport singing
songs (learned via Mr. Pearson) popular at the
time (‘A long Way to Tipperary’, ‘Pack up your
Troubles’). Many older folk whom we passed
stopped and smiled, commenting on the
memories it brought back for them.
Once at the Museum the staff (all in costume and
character themselves) provided that wonderful mix
of fun and education which got the boys
involved, extending their knowledge and
understanding of what it may have been like to
experience a day being evacuated.
The boys learned about salvage (ask them about
being a COG), Make-do and Mend (get those
knitting lessons started!) and ARP (gas masks on!).
The tunnels themselves, which were dug out to
use as shelters, were a treat for the boys who
were fascinated by the thoughts of spending
nights down there in conditions not many of them
would have appreciated.
A wonderful visit for all!
