YEAR 3
Year 3 began this half term with their visit to the
World of Glass at St Helen’s. We went on a tour
of the cone building and looked at where glass
used to be made. Hard hats were a necessity as
we went through low tunnels and passageways.
We learned that the nearby canal was known as
‘The Hotties’ because it was warmed by all the
furnaces.
Next we learned about glass properties and also the history of glass.
Did you know glass was first discovered by the Egyptians 4000 years
ago?
We learned that glass fibres can be used for cameras that look inside
the body, as well as for containing medicines and many other uses.
This chandelier is made of 1200 droplets of glass. It used to hang in
Manchester Airport.
Dylan and Rory are concentrating hard on their
glass painting. We later wrapped these and
gave them to our mums for Mother’s Day.
The climax of the day
was the glass blowing demonstration where
Simon showed us the traditional method of blow-
ing a glass ‘gob’ using molten glass and turning
it to keep the shape. He made the funny face
which we have raffled off for Comic Relief.
Sheen was lucky enough to be chosen to have a
go. It’s not as easy as it looks!
Year 3 were enthralled by the glass
blowing.
A happy day was
had by all!
We enjoyed lunch in the
schoolroom.
