YEAR 3 EGYPTIAN
DAY
We had a day devoted to learning about the
Ancient Egyptians with Charlie Lupton. It was a
fantastic opportunity to learn in a practical and
creative way. We had to do maths, art, physical
activities, teamwork and problem solving.
In order to experience how difficult it was to
move heavy blocks, we used sledges on a
wooden ‘railway’ and weighed ourselves. We
then recorded our combined weight.
We used tools to smooth rocks
and also to carve hieroglyphics.
Eye protection and gloves were
vital.
Charlie showed us how the Egyptians treated
and mummified their bodies. Wrapping was
tricky!
Making papyrus
took lots of rubbing
and patience.
Building the pyramid took all day. The Egyptians
took 20 years! We used a scale of 1:80. Our pyra-
mid was 3metres square. Each block would have
weighed 1 tonne. The Egyptians devised a way of
using ramps and scaffolding to do the upper layers.
So did we.
Crowning the final piece.
The Egyptians cleverly
built a secret entrance
to the pyramid so that
thieves couldn’t get
in. We also built a
secret way in and
everyone had a go.
Avi was first. His im-
mortal words were,
“It’s dark in here”.
