SPORT
Spring Term 2014 started off wet and miserable but that was
not going to stop every boy in Years 3 to 6 being given the
opportunity to represent the school at a variety of Sports.
Quicksticks hockey to 7 a side Inter Hockey; Tag rugby to 12
a side and rugby 7s; from 5 a side indoor football to 7 a side
football as well as swimming galas and cross country champi-
onships. Even 18 Year 2 boys were fortunate in forming 3
squads in the APS Open Day Inter-School Football Festival.
January saw the annual visit from City of London Freemen’s
School to play 3 Year 5 teams at rugby on the Sale FC
(Heywood Road) pitch in which APS were undefeated.
(photos on the school website!).The U11 rugby team also
recorded some good results, beating Rydal, Terra Nova and
Stonyhurst at 12 a side. Year 3 all enjoyed playing football
against The Grange and fielded 3 reams in their first game of
Tag Rugby.
The U11 cross country runners finished runners-up at the
Sedbergh North Prep schools meeting over a tough hilly
course in the South Lakes and the school hockey team got in
some good practice matches against Terra Nova and Ryleys,
beating both.
In February Y6 fielded 5 teams against King’s Chester at
football and the hockey 1st team went to the Midlands &
North IAPS Hockey tournament at Repton where the boys
played really well, winning 4 games, losing 1 and drawing 3
before being knocked out on penalty flicks.
March saw the onset of the Rugby Sevens season during
which the APS teams played some excellent passing rugby
losing at the semi-final stages of two tournaments to Pack-
wood and Kirkham GS, and to London Oratory in the final of
the plate at Stonyhurst 7s. The Year 4 boys also lost at the
semi-final stage iof their tournament after extra time to the
eventual winners. Year 4 became the first APS year 4 to play
an inter-school Quicksticks hockey match as we continue to
develop hockey. The 1st hockey team continued to play well
and finished runners-up at The Ryleys tournament.
