FRENCH
Coming soon to Early Years in French!
Hocus and Lotus, the little dinocrocs who teach languages to young children.
This is what the publishers and researchers say about The Dinocrocs:
This innovative language learning material for young children, developed in the Faculty of Psychology at
the University of Rome, is the result of a research project involving child development and language
specialists across Europe. It is designed to introduce a new language to very young children from the age
of three.
The Dinocrocs system uses a story telling approach based on the adventures of two cartoon characters,
Hocus and Lotus. Using songs, drama and stories acted out in the classroom, it is designed to appeal to
young children’s desire to hear the same story over and over again. The stories are in French and have
been carefully developed to assist the process of language acquisition through repetition and through visual
clues which support understanding. Children quickly identify with the cartoon characters and the magic
world they inhabit, and their emotional engagement underlies the success of the method, which has been
extensively tracked by researchers.
I had heard about The Dinocrocs and wanted to see them in action. I visited a colleague in another
school, where The Dinocrocs are being used very successfully. I saw the enjoyment and enthusiasm of the
children and decided that I would like to introduce The Dinocrocs to Early Years at APS too!
