La Presse Scolaire - April 2014 - page 9

Year 3 began the Spring term by studying materials and their properties in Science. We had an exciting
day at the World of Glass where the boys had hands on practice at painting glass, handling different arte-
facts, and learning what it would be like to work in the tunnels below the furnaces. They watched a fan-
tastic multimedia presentation with loud bangs and flashes, and as a climax to the day, they watched glass
being blown. Archie in 3R was lucky enough to have a try himself and blew a huge swan-like figure.
Sadly we couldn’t bring it back on the coach.
In our English lessons we have studied a varied curriculum with
some very exciting and dramatic results. We began by learning
about the Willow Pattern Plate and the story behind the design.
The boys retold the story in the form of booklets and designed
patterns on plates in the same style as the famous pottery.
Next we looked at Greek Myths and Legends, and the boys were
fascinated by creatures such as the Minotaur. For homework
they created their own posters, and in class they used the story
of Daedalus and Icarus as stimulus for more art and creative writ-
ing.
We spent two weeks looking at instructions and the
language and presentation of these. We were sur-
prised at how many ways instructions appear. We
followed instructions for making pop-up cards and
evaluated how easy they were to follow. Next, we
watched Mrs White perform her ‘vanishing key’ trick,
following instructions. We also went outside to play
hopscotch, again following instructions. This fitted in
beautifully with Sport Relief so we had a very ener-
getic day!
World Book Day was great fun with everyone dressing up as
characters and bringing in their favourite books to share. We
all wrote book reviews and these are collected together in a
folder on the year 3 corridor.
Possibly the best day was baking,
where all the year 3 teachers and Mrs
McNally helped us to follow a recipe
and bake cupcakes. Verdict...mmmm!
