La Presse Scolaire - April 2014 - page 7

As part of our History work
on the Great Fire of London
we burnt twelve medieval
houses to the ground. It
was a really spectacular
event and we were very
relieved it did not turn into
the Great Fire of
Bowdon!
Believing, Belonging and Joining ...
We were delighted in February to be visited by Rev. Myles from St. Mary’s Church, who
explained his role as a Christian minister. He brought in lots of interesting
artefacts and encouraged us to discuss their significance. In March, Mrs
Schweiger enriched our understanding of the Jewish festival of Pesach
(Passover) and we were able to make Sader plates and taste special foods.
Bats
In English we have been
learning about Night
Time and this topic was
greatly enhanced by a
visit from Ged Ryan,
Cheshire's Batman! We
learnt a great deal about
British bats and how we
can help with regards to
their conservation. We
got a close-up look at a
tiny Pipistrelle bat and
designed, wrote and
illustrated our own Bat
Facts leaflets.
A big thank you to Mrs Gilmartin and Mr Taylor who joined Year 2 today for an exciting afternoon all about electricity. As an expert in the field,
gave the boys a fascinating presentation on renewable energy. She even generated enough electricity by spinning a magnet between some coils of
light a bulb - no batteries or mains power required! The boys used their knowledge of circuit making to create their own torches and Mr Taylor, a
tricity North West, had the boys generating their own energy through pedal power. The faster they pedalled, the more electricity they generated.
tricity bills, this may be just be the future of running the lights at home!

Electricity
In Science we have had fantastic fun learning
about electricity. Mrs Gilmartin gave a super
presentation on renewable energy and really
impressed us by generating enough electricity,
using only a magnet and some copper wire, to
light a bulb!
Mr Taylor helped us to make torches and then
encouraged us to generate our own energy
through pedal power. This resulted in some very
fast competitive pedalling in Year 2!
