Year 4
Get us to the church on time!
As part of our work this term in both History and
RE the Year 4 boys were given the opportunity
to investigate the inside of the parish church at St
Mary’s.
We found evidence that there had been a religious
site in Bowdon for more than 1000 years and the
boys were able to look back on some of the parish
record dating back centuries.
Reverend Myles also help the boys to under-
stand some of the imagery and symbolism
found around the church and how it had devel-
oped over the years.

Trip to the mosque
In order to extend our understanding of
religion in our local area even further, as
well as our visits to the local church and
synagogue, we were fortunate enough to
once more be invited to Altrincham Mosque
for a morning learning about Islam.
Understanding about prayer mats, prayer
beads, facing towards Mecca and the
importance of the Quran opened up the
eyes of the boys to not only the differences
but also the links that all the major
monotheistic religions of the world share.
The boys learned about some of the
features of the mosque and the practices of
Islam. They were especially fascinated by
the Arabic alphabet and thoroughly enjoyed
having a go at writing their own names in it.
There were lovely cakes too!
Mrs Saigol (the parent of an ex-pupil) welcomed us
to the Mosque
Visiting the synagogue
A walk up to the synagogue provided us with our final visit to
a religious building in our local area, allowing us to discover
more about Judaism and the role the synagogue plays in the
Jewish community.
Judy and Leslie were our guides and they were excellent at
giving the boys interesting nuggets of information regarding
what goes on in the synagogue.
We learned about the significance of prayer shawls, the
kippah and the Torah scrolls and also how important
preparing food is to Jewish people. We also realised that
much more than just praying goes on in the synagogue and
that it is an real centre of the local Jewish community, where
family, friends and members of the congregation meet and
get together.
Another fascinating link in our knowledge and understanding
of our cultural diversity.
