Year 5
English
Thinking back to the autumn term, year 5 went on their first trip of the year to he Royal
Exchange Theatre. We listened to ‘The Dark Wood Tales’ storyteller sharing his exciting stories
with an enthralled audience. At the end he told the boys about a competition to write and illus-
trate their own story. It had to be a retelling of a traditional fairytale in a new and imaginative
setting. Year 5 APS boys entered the competition but had completely forgotten about it until last
week! A huge box of books arrived in Mr Potts’ office and a letter and certificate
congratulating the competition winner! Sheen in 5GK had rewritten the story of the
3 Little Pigs in an outer space setting. Sheen’s prize was 10 signed copies of books
by well known children’s authors. The school were also equipped with £300 worth of
new books for our school library. A huge congratulations and a big thank you to
Sheen. His teachers are very proud.
An amazing time was had by all on our annual visit to the Glaramara Activity Centre in The
Lake District. The boys enjoyed the exciting activities, the newly refurbished rooms and of
course, the food! Their behaviour was impeccable and it was great to be able to spend time
outside the classroom with them all. A well deserved treat after all the hard work they have
put in this year!

Science
Continuing our careers talks this term by parents, (both present and past), saw Year 5
enjoy presentations by Mr. Boyle and Inspector Armfield. Mr Boyle talked about the
career path he followed into law, describing the skills and qualifications needed to
become a lawyer and barrister. Inspector Armfield from Greater Manchester Police
discussed the multifaceted roles they play and the myriad of different jobs within the
force, from front line policing to forensics. The boys thoroughly enjoyed these ses-
sions prompting lots of questioning and many showing an interest in
pursuing a career into these areas.
Many thanks to both Mr Boyle and Inspector Armfield for giving up
their valuable time to come into school and give fantastic talks.
As part of our science topic ‘Space’ Year 5 enjoyed a trip to the space telescope discovery centre at Jodrell
Bank in Cheshire. They took part in many activities from studying space exploration to planets and constel-
lations, learning many facts about the planets of our solar system. The boys agreed that their favourite
activity was the Mars Rover challenge. This involved boys working in groups to design and build a landing
craft which could keep a raw egg intact after being dropped from a height of 2m using only paper, cello
tape, straws, string and balloons. Many groups came up with some fantastic ideas with 2 managing to suc-
cessfully land their egg without breaking!
