YEAR 5
As the Autumn Term comes to a close in year 5, we reflect on the exciting half term we have had.
Back in November the boys studied the poem ‘The
Highywayman’ by Alfred Noyes and enjoyed a visit from
the mysterious Blackheart Bill. His terrible tales of his
life of crime inspired some excellent writing of both
diary extracts and narrative prose. His dramatic
entrance into the school hall waving his pistols certainly
caused some excitement and the question and answer
session that followed allowed the boys to learn a great
deal about the hardships of life during the reign of King
George 1 and the romantic image of the ‘gentlemen of
the highways’.
Our History topic on Tudor Exploration has just come to
an end . The boys have learnt about Voyages of
Discovery and in particular the achievements of
Christopher Columbus and Sir Francis Drake. We look
forward to beginning our geography topic ‘Rivers and
Water’ in January.
Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed the visit from the Mad
Science team and their Sonic Sound Workshop. These
activities reinforced their learning on the topic of sound
that they have been working on this term. They know
all about the human ear and enjoyed making musical
instruments and participating in a Year 5’s got talent
competition.
Contrary to common opinion, it’s not all ‘work work
work’ in year 5 and even we have had the chance for a
little downtime where the boys have enjoyed making
Christmas decorations and helping to create our stun-
ning ‘Snowman’ display.
We wish you a wonderful Christmas and hope there is
time for some rest and relaxation in addition to all the
fun and excitement.
