Nursery: Mathematics

The Nursery environment is carefully planned to provide a wide range opportunities for mathematical development and learning with numbers. Recently the boys are showing an interest in number problems and have been enjoying maths games that allow them to make comparisons between groups of objects or try matching numeral to quantity. The interactive Ten Town programme and related activities also encourage interest in number recognition and formation. We like to count in sequence wherever possible, often using our fingers to represent number during rhymes, or even just counting movements such as steps, claps and jumps. During play we regularly introduce mathematical language and concepts, encouraging the boys to explore shape, space and measure. We discuss the size and shape of objects in the environment, whilst also using positional language.
