Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

Year 2 at Highbury is an exciting and challenging year that builds on skills acquired in previous years as well as developing a greater level of independence, organisation and responsibility.  New roles and responsibilities are given to the boys at the start of the year, such as School Councillor and Eco Councillor.  The boys develop a sense of camaraderie in their respective houses: Tedder, Montgomery, Alexander and Cunningham, and they enjoy a range of extra-curricular activities and rich learning opportunities.

The boys become more competent readers and writers by exploring a range of text types such as letters, diary entries, stories, non-chronological reports and shape poems, linking to their learning in other subjects. Grammar work focuses on the use of commas, apostrophes, inverted commas for speech and different sentence types as well as extending their understanding and use of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Knowledge of phonics and spelling patterns is strengthened and reinforced before making the transition to Year 3.

As mathematicians, the boys build on their number skills and explore number patterns and relationships. A large part of our work involves developing written and mental competences linked to the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Problem-solving skills and the use of bar models and pictures are interwoven into each mathematical topic area including money, measure, data and time. Boys leave Year 2 with a good foundation in their times tables due to regular practice and testing, and our ever-popular whole class competition, ‘Tables League’, which promotes rapid recall of all times tables.

In Year 2, boys are introduced to verbal and non-verbal reasoning and use their comprehension and problem-solving skills from English and Mathematics to support their work.

As part of our broad curriculum, the boys develop their curiosity about the world around them. As geographers, the boys learn about their local environment, enjoying a trip to Altrincham town centre. As historians, the boys explore the world of Tutankhamun and learn about life in Ancient Egypt. As scientists, boys learn how animals and plants have adapted to their environments as well as investigating everyday materials. In addition, boys learn to articulate their understanding of and respect for others through RS, focusing on Christianity and Islam, and PSHE as well as regular assemblies and celebrations. Trips and visiting speakers feature throughout the year to enhance learning and we all look forward to our end of year trip to the beach!
