Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

Year 2 at Highbury is an exciting and challenging year that builds on skills acquired in previous years as well as developing a greater level of independence, organisation and responsibility.  Different roles and responsibilities are given to the boys at the start of the year such as school councilor and house monitor.  The boys develop a sense of comaraderie in their respective houses; Tedder, Montgomery, Alexander and Cunningham. They enjoy a range of extra- curricular activities from puzzle club to Spanish club as well as a range of sports clubs.

Boys have a rich learning experience across the curriculum and develop their understanding and use of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Grammar work focuses on use of commas in a list, apostrophes, sentence types and introduces punctuation for dialogue. As writers, the boys then apply their new learning to a range of text types such as letters, diary entries, stories, non-chronological reports and shape poems.

As mathematicians, the boys build on their number skills and explore patterns and relationships using three and four digit numbers. It is expected that all boys will know all of their times tables by the end of Year 2 and the boys enjoy the challenge and competition of our twice weekly tables league sessions. Problem solving skills are taught throughout the year relating to money, measure, data and simple numbers and boys are taught how to use the bar model.

In Year 2, boys are introduced to verbal and non-verbal reasoning and use their comprehension and problem solving skills from English and Maths to support their work.

As part of our broad curriculum, boys explore the world of Tutankhamun, and learn about life in Ancient Egypt. As scientists, boys learn how animals and plants have adapted to their environments as well as investigating states of matter. Boys have a deep dive into the history and culture of Christianity and Islam as part of our RE learning and develop a respect and understanding of different beliefs and views linking with our PSHCE curriculum and regular assemblies. Trips and visiting speakers feature throughout the year to enhance learning wherever possible.
